‘Non-survivable’: heatwaves are already breaching human limits, with worse to come, study finds

A new study analyzing six extreme heatwaves from 2003 to 2024 found that when temperature, humidity, and age-related physiological factors are considered, conditions were non-survivable for older people, with some events also deadly for younger adults. The research, published in Nature Communications, indicates that human survivability limits are lower than previously assumed and that heat-related deaths are underreported globally.
