Police fire shots in air to disperse angry crowds at DR Congo Ebola treatment centre

Police in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo fired warning shots to disperse crowds attempting to retrieve the bodies of Ebola victims from a Mongwalu treatment center, part of rising community unrest tied to distrust of public health measures during the country's 17th recorded Ebola outbreak. The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain for which no vaccines are currently available, has recorded over 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths, spread to Uganda, been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the WHO, and spurred a $319 million cross-border response plan coordinated by the Africa CDC.
