Man arrested after four die trying to cross Channel in small boat

A 27-year-old Sudanese national was arrested at Kent's Manston processing centre on suspicion of endangering life under the UK's Border, Security, Asylum and Immigration Act after four people (two men, two women) were swept away by strong currents and died while attempting to board a smuggling taxi-boat off the Pas-de-Calais coast. Human rights groups Humans For Rights Network and Project Play condemned UK and French border policies, stating that intensified police interception measures on beaches have pushed smugglers to deploy more dangerous taxi-boats, forcing migrants to wade into the sea to board them.
